In a new interview with The Telegraph, Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, were asked about Harry and Meghan’s infamous interview with the American television host which sparked speculation about racism in the royal family, strained already tense ties and was the elephant in the room when Harry returned to the UK for Prince Philip’s funeral.
“Oprah who?” Prince Edward replied, while Sophie said, “what interview?”, reportedly with a laugh.
The Countess said she spoke at length with Harry at the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral and that “we are still a family no matter what happens, we always will be”.
Edward and Sophie are taking on a more prominent role within the family following Harry and Meghan’s departure and Philip’s death earlier this year.
“We’ve plodded along doing what we’re doing, hopefully doing it well. And then all of a sudden there’s a bit of a hiatus and things have changed a bit. Naturally, the media are looking for people to fill the so-called void,” Sophie said.
“If people want to pay more attention to what we’re doing, then great.”
Their comments come as a petition launched two weeks ago by Lady Colin Campbell, a British writer well known for her biographies about members of the royal family, surpassed 58,000 signatures.
It calls on Prince Harry to ask the Queen to put his royal titles aside “freeing him from the diplomatic, political and constitutional constraints that are an inevitable part of royal rank”.
It goes on to say that some of the Prince’s comments are creating “constitutional conflicts”
Last year, Piers Morgan called for Harry and Meghan to be stripped of their titles after the Duchess of Sussex spoke about the US election in what he considered a “brazenly partisan way”.
Lady Colin says on the petition that by being a private citizen, Harry could “indulge his personal beliefs”
She says this would free him of the “consequential possibility of damaging the institution of the Monarchy or relations between Friendly Powers”.
He would be “free to articulate beliefs, no matter how objectionable, without the fallout that is otherwise inevitable as long as he possesses royal status”.
